Diddy Reveals: I Pay Sting $5K Per Day

Sting, 71, is resting while his royalties are mounting every day, and Diddy is one of the contributors to this fortune.

 According to Diddy, he pays Sting $5,000 daily for sampling one of his songs without authorization.

Sting wrote “Every Breath You Take,” and it was released by his band—The Police, in 1983, but it was sampled in Diddy's and Faith Evans' 1997 tribute to the late The Notorious B.I.G., titled "I'll Be Missing You."

In a newly resurfaced 2018 interview with The Breakfast Club, Sting verified the speculations that Diddy pays him $2,000 daily “for the rest of his life” for using his song without permission. 

While the event that brought them together isn't the best, they managed the situation well, as Sting reveals they are now good friends.

Diddy, however, took to Twitter on Wednesday to correct that he pays $5,000 daily, not $2,000. 

In response to the resurfaced interview, he wrote, "Nope. 5K a day. Love to my brother @OfficialSting!" he tweeted.

The New York Times revealed that Sting sold his remarkable songwriting archives to Universal Music for $300 million.

However, the licensing agency BMI revealed that in 2019, "Every Breath You Take" was the most performed song in the catalog.

In Sting’s interview with ET in 2021, he revealed that he would love to be recognized for more than just his music. Because music is not all of him—there are other sides. 

"My legacy, I hope, is beyond the music," Sting reflected. "You know, I'm more than just a musician. I'm a father. I'm a husband. I'm a citizen. The legacy is a bigger thing than just hits."

Following Diddy’s update about how much he pays Sting daily, fans and followers of both parties weighed in on the matter, expressing how they feel about the arrangement.

One commenter wrote, “It was worth it! I’ll be missing you is a classic.” Another wrote, “When you are rich, it doesn't matter. That's like $5 a day for him.”

Another tweeted, “Imagine waking up in the morning and owing someone $5000. Imagining owing $5k and being so rich doesn't make you blink. I would be inconsolable. I’d be faking my own death.” They concluded. 

QueenYaya wrote, “Y’all forgot he took the whole earning from Juicewrld Lucid Dreams because the producer didn't clear the sample. Sting said he would use the money for his grandchild’s college fund.” 

Haroot wrote, “yo @Officialsting, not the wrestler. Can I have a portion of that 5k since I have Puffy’s Bday? I need it anyways, but I can contribute with musical riffs, melodies, drums, mastering, and connections to Interscope, Joe Satrian, Guthrie, and Steve Vai. Computer dev, data base, iOS/and apps."

Thomas Lograsso channeled their inner mathematician and multiplied the daily sum per annum, “1.825 million a year, that’s a lot of money.” 

Hypo weighed in saying the arrangement sounds like a horrible child support case.
