It's no secret that restaurants and bars have had a rough couple of years. The Covid-19 pandemic completely closed many of them down for months, with some going out of business. Now that everything is open again and the world is slowly getting back to normal, we have a new obstacle to deal with: inflation.

Restaurants, bars, and other services are feeling the sting of higher grocery prices as much as the rest of us, and they're figuring out ways in which they can keep from losing too much profit. One Reddit user who was in the Philadelphia area shared a pic of their bar bill, which showed that, due to inflation, the establishment wanted to charge an extra 3% on top of other tips and fees. The user posted their pic and story to the Mildly Interesting community.

"This bar I went to in the Philadelphia area has an additional inflation tax that I can just 'ask' them to take off," the user wrote, accompanied by the bill in question. The image consists of just part of the bill, which reads, "Due to inflationary pressure, a temporary 3% surcharge has been added to guest checks. If you would like this removed, we'll be happy to do so upon request."

In other words, people who didn't notice or read the fine print would have to pay the charge, unless they were paying enough attention to ask to have it removed.

The question that was on everyone's mind was, what did OP do about the surcharge? Apparently, they just got it removed, and added that 3% to their tip. Other users discussed how similar practices started once restaurants and bars started opening up after Covid restrictions. Apparently, they were "compensating" for Covid-related losses.

A Pretty Shady Way To Increase Costs

Rather than increase the menu items, these restaurants and bars are just adding extra fees. Many users debated how that kind of practice was a little misleading and rather frustrating for consumers, who deserve to be made aware of the charges up front.

People Took Time To Make Jokes

Users make jokes about which bar it might be.

Because the bar just so happened to be in Philadelphia, fans of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia couldn't help but joke around about it a little bit. Though, inflation might make for an interesting premise for an episode.
