For Christina Ricci, collecting luxury bags as an investment took on a whole new meaning when it helped pay for her divorce.

The 42-year-old Addams Family actress revealed in an interview with The Sunday Times that she used to have a sizeable collection of Chanel handbags and jewelry. But when she filed for divorce from ex-husband James Heerdegen in 2020, she needed funds, explaining that “certain traumas in life go along with financial traumas, extended court situations, custody situations [and] fighting restraining orders.” The Chanel collection came in handy then.

Ricci filed for divorce from Heerdegen in July 2020 after almost seven years of marriage. To raise money, she said she “sold a lot of things” from her Chanel bag collection.

“Having said that, I’m absolutely doing fine; there’s no issue,” she continued. “But I learned to use these investment pieces in different ways. I also had a Chanel fine jewelry collection that I put to good use.”

Ricci And Heerdegen's Relationship Timeline

The Santa Monica, California native met Heerdegen in 2011 on the set of her TV series Pan Am, where he worked as a dolly grip. They started dating in 2012, announced their engagement in February 2013, and got married in October of that year.

In August 2014, Ricci gave birth to their only child, a son named Freddie. And in July 2020, she obtained an emergency protective order against Heerdegen and filed for divorce.

Bitter Divorce

In January 2021, the actress also obtained a domestic violence restraining order against her ex-husband. Court documents obtained by People said that he subjected her to “severe physical and emotional abuse,” often witnessed by their son.

Also in 2021, Ricci was granted custody of Freddie, while Heerdegen was allowed to see him through his “regular monitored visitation time.”

The Casper star has since moved on from the drama and is now married to her second husband, hairstylist Mark Hampton, with whom she has a daughter named Cleopatra.

Chanel Has Great Resale Value

Ricci’s decision to sell her Chanels turned out to be a good one, as bags from the brand have great resale value. Fashionphile Senior Curator Jessica Henderson told CNBC Make It, “It’s an investment that you can enjoy now, and then you can also get your money back later on if it’s kept in the same condition.”

She added, “Right now is a good time to sell and also purchase these items because the prices are only going to increase.”
