Relationships can be especially complicated when there are kids involved. Most people won't have a problem with their significant other's kids, but may not necessarily want to become a "replacement parent" for them either. Some people would rather not be step-parents in the first place.

One woman took to Reddit to ask if she was wrong for introducing her son to her boyfriend's kids over the Thanksgiving holiday. The issue here is, despite not knowing them very well herself, she told her son to call them grandma and grandpa. The user, who goes by Character_Bed_1205, shared her story with the Am I The Asshole community.

The User's Story Is... Quite Awkward.

The user explains how she'd taken her four-year-old son with her to her boyfriend Jay's house for Thanksgiving. Since Jay's parents would be there, it would be OP's son's first time meeting them. OP explains that she didn't have much of a relationship with Jay's parents as of yet, but was head over heels for Jay, whom she'd been dating for a year and a half.

When OP arrived with her son, she introduced Jay's parents as "grandma and grandpa." The parents got pretty quiet after that and seemed awkward whenever the son would address them as his grandparents. After they'd left, OP asked what was wrong, and Jay was incredibly angry at how OP put his parents in such an awkward position.

OP was upset at Jay for yelling at her and was hoping for an apology. But in an update on the post, she admitted her wrongdoing. She also confirmed that she and Jay are taking a break as of right now.

Needless To Say, Many Users Saw That Coming.

One user simply said, "yikes."

Many users expressed the fact that they felt second-hand embarrassment after reading the post. Unfortunately, it seems like OP misread her relationship with her boyfriend and his parents in a very weird way.

Plenty Of Users Pointed Out That She Made The Situation Awkward By Assuming These Roles For Everyone Involved.

Users agreed that OP messed up.

A lot of users in the comment section took issue with the fact that OP decided that Jay's parents were her son's grandparents without actually telling anyone beforehand. It's as if she decided they would take on those roles without even asking if they wanted to.

In Fact, Commenters Pretty Much Unanimously Agreed That OP Was In The Wrong.

Other users also pointed out that, despite OP's relationship with Jay going well, that doesn't mean that he's her son's replacement dad. All in all, it's a pretty bad situation to be in.
