Few series have ever been as exciting, enticing, and disturbing as The Handmaid's Tale. The story of the dystopian society of Gilead, based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, has fastly become one of the most-watched and popular shows on television.
Recently, Hulu released the trailer for the upcoming 4th season. And come April 28th, audiences everywhere will be able to bear witness to June's revolution. Here's everything we know about The Handmaid's Tale season 4, so far...
For anyone who may be unfamiliar with the immensely popular Hulu series, The Handmaid's Tale is based on the book of the same name, written by Margaret Atwood.
The story takes place in Gilead, an alternate-world version of the United States. In this dystopian universe, young fertile women are bred into a life of slavery and forced against their will to give birth in order to help bolster the population.
First of all, the trailer is really little more than a teaser at best, comprised mostly of clips from previous episodes. After last season's giant cliffhanger, audiences really don't know what to expect but here's what we've been able to dissect so far:
June appears to be planning an attack on Gilead and is depicted as being a rising rebel leader. But as her thirst for revenge grows ever direr, June begins taking greater and greater risks, putting herself and everyone she loves at risk.
In season 3, The Handmaid's Tale made a stark departure from the source material. With no more books to go on, fans are now left largely in the dark wondering what will happen next.
This means that everything and anything is possible. Will we find out what happened to Fred and Serena? Could we see the children in Canada? And what about that whole bit about Nick's real identity? There's still a ton of questions left unanswered.
Elisabeth Moss confirmed as much during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. She, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, and Ann Dowd have all signed on — to name a few. Elisabeth also loosely hinted that we could be seeing some new faces this season. "We have six regulars in Canada now," she stated.
With such a large number of the recurring cast now north of the border, it only makes sense that new relationships will be forged and new characters introduced.
As of yet, there's been no indication that The Handmaid's Tale is coming to a close. That being said, producer Warren Littlefield did confirm that there is a spin-off series in the works, based on Margaret Atwood's novel "The Testaments."
Littlefield goes on to say that "I think we want to keep the bar high, and it would not be a bad thing to leave the audience wanting more and then we could ideally shift into The Testaments."
The internet is already awash with a frenzy of tweets and some of the cleverest memes I've ever seen. This past year has been detrimental to the film and television industries and for the first time in ages, there looks to be a sliver of light at the end of the tunnel.
Finally, our patience is being rewarded. Let us all bask in the glory of The Handmaid's Tale and rejoice!
We've got a little less than two months to go until the April 28th premiere date. It feels lightyears away, especially for those of us who are still stuck in lockdown but remember that the night is darkest just before the dawn.
Plus, now we have two solid months to be able to go back, rewatch, get caught up, and do all that needs to be done to prep ourselves for the brand new season of The Handmaid's Tale. Huzzah!
