12+ Things That Happened In 2009 That Have Us Saying "How Was This 10 Years Ago?"

Let us just blow your minds for a sec: 2009 was almost a decade ago.

Seems hard to believe, huh?

Especially when we can remember some of the craziest pop culture moments like it was just yesterday.

Like Miley's scandalous pole dancing performance, Glee premiering, and we can't forget the infamous "imma let you finish" moment with Kayne West.

Prepare to feel very old as we take a stroll down memory lane with these 13 pop culture moments that happened in 2009.

1) Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States.

Given the state of the United States now, a lot of Americans might want to go back to this moment when Barack Obama was sworn in as President.

In his inauguration speech, he didn't focus too much on how he was the first black president of the U.S.

Instead, he used his speech to maintain his promises to advocate good change.

Obama went on to serve two full terms before leaving office in January 2017.

2) ‘Jersey Shore’ premiered and our lives were never the same.

Oh boy, there's no way we can forget the day Jersey Shore hit our screens.

From that first episode on, we tuned in each week to see all the drama, blow-outs, and hookups.

Not to mention, the daily GTL (Gym, Tanning, Laundry).

We’re so happy this show has been rebooted!

The gang got back together to film Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. Season three is premiering soon!

3) ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’ had quite "the climb" up the box office.

IMBD

We used to race home to watch this show on the Disney Channel, so of course, we laughed, cried, and screamed our way through the movie version.

For a tween TV show, it ended up bringing home the big bucks at the box office.

It made $169 million!

And who could forget that Tyra Banks cameo?

4) Speaking of Miley Cyrus, she got good at shedding her Hannah Montana image.

While nothing really surprises us with Miley anymore, back then, this performance definitely did.

When she started pole dancing, people definitely had some thoughts.

Including reactions, like this one, from people who wished they could unsee her performance.

Little did we know the many phases of Miley that were ahead of us.

5) Michael Jackson passed away at age 50.

The King of Pop passed away in his home on June 25, 2009.

He was found in an L.A. mansion that he was renting at the time.

He was rushed to the hospital for cardiac arrest.

Later, it was revealed that the death was caused by all of the prescription drugs that were prescribed by his own physician.

6) Chris Pratt and Anna Faris got married.

This is a sad one to remember since the couple is now divorced.

In fact, Pratt recently got married to Arnold Schwarzenegger's daughter!

Pratt and Faris had their son, Jack, in 2012 and then called it quits nine years later in 2018.

7) "Avatar" showed us a whole new world and broke records

IMDB

I’m still regretting not seeing this movie when it came out in 2009, since everyone was freaking out about it.

It was directed by James Cameron of Titantic fame.

It even went on to become the highest grossing film of all time until Avengers: Endgame recently passed it.

8) Lady Gaga gave folks a real scare with her bloody performance of “Paparazzi.”

While we've seen Lady Gaga do some pretty crazy things over the years, nothing — and we mean, nothing — can top that 2009 MTV VMA performance.

She shocked the world with the blood, walking stick, and her “death” at the end.

She wanted to send a message that the media attention on celebrities needed to change.

She definitely accomplished that.

9) "Glee" premiered and we embraced our inner Gleek

IMDB

Ahhh, we're feeling really old, rn. Glee premiered 10 years ago.

There was something very odd about its premiere, though.

IMDB

The pilot premiered in May of 2009, but then the rest of that first reason didn’t air until September.

Weird!

10) Other major things was happening in TV Land.

IMDB

While we binge mainly on Netflix today, back in 2009, it was all about using the TV to catch our fav shows.

In 2009, it was season five of The Office and Pam just found out she was pregnant.

The first season of "Parks and Recreation" had ended.

And Chad Michael Murray broke our hearts by announcing plans to leave One Tree Hill.

We're still not over it.

11) 2009 was also rocked with these celebrity breakups.

Hollywood romances are a hard thing to pull off, no matter the year.

But in 2009, there were some memorable breakups that broke our hearts as just much as theirs.

This includes Chris Brown and Rihanna, LeAnne Rimes and Dean Sheremet, and Jennifer Aniston and John Mayor.

12) The mania for the "Twilight" series was still going strong.

IMDB

Although Twilight had premiered in 2008, the franchise was still going so strong in 2009.

Case in point: my friends and I would make t-shirts and wait in line for hours for the movie premiere. Yeah, we were cool.

So when the new trailer for "New Moon", the second movie in the franchise came out, fans went nuts.

It even became one of the most-watched videos on YouTube!

Twihards mean business!

13) And of course, we have to end on the infamous "Kayne interrupting Taylor” moment.

We gotta type fast or else Kayne might interrupt us!

Back in 2009, all was good for Taylor Swift; she was a rising star and had just won an award at the VMAs.

And then ... Kayne happened.

“Yo Taylor,” he began, before saying that “Imma let you finish but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!”

Since then, the two have had a rocky relationship ...

They appeared to patch things up, only for Kayne to later call Taylor a [expletive] in one of his songs.

This, as we know, ended up causing Taylor Swift being called a snake and her whole “Reputation” period.

Luckily, that period has now been replaced by lovely butterflies, yay!

And that's 2009. What a nostalgic rollercoaster!
