Sonya Eddy passed away earlier this week aged 55. The General Hospital star's passing was announced by close friend Octavia Spencer on Instagram - at the time, however, her cause of death had not been revealed. Octavia shared a photo of Sonya as she shared the tragic news, with fans and celebrities quickly filling the comments section. Earlier today, Eddy's cause of death was revealed, with a friend telling TMZ that she had died following "complications" after a non-emergency surgery. Tyler Ford opened up to the outlet to confirm that Sonya had undergone a planned procedure on December 9 and was released from the hospital two days later.

Tyler told TMZ that award-winning Eddy had gone home, but that she began to feel unwell and returned to the hospital on December 15. Doctors at the facility then discovered that she had an infection, one deemed uncontainable. Fast-forward to Monday, and she was already on life support prior to dying that night.

In her post shared yesterday, Octavia wrote: "My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her 💔🕊️ My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!" A like has been left by sitcom star Jennifer Aniston.

Fans Are Heartbroken

Fan tributes have been pouring in. "I absolutely loved her in the Epiphany role! I’ve watched GH since the 70’s and still watch today. My condolences to your family," one user wrote.

Meanwhile, ABC told Page Six, “General Hospital is sad to confirm the passing of actress Sonya Eddy, who embodied her character … the tough but compassionate, head nurse, Epiphany Johnson … and immediately became a fan favorite and beloved member of our GH family when she joined the show in 2006.”

A Life On Screen

Eddy, who was born in California, has endless credits to her name, from ER to Lizzie McGuire. The actress was much loved for her hard-hitting and no-nonsense Epiphany character, one coming as a head nurse and also as a mother to Stan Johnson on the popular series. She appeared in a total of 543 episodes for her recurring role and was, herself, a licensed vocational nurse.

Producer 'Heartbroken'

General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini has paid his respects, saying that the entire cast and crew was sending its "deepest sympathy" to family, plus "friends and fans." He added that he was "heartbroken" over the loss.
