45-year-old John Mayer is a heartthrob of this generation. Not only that, Mayer has dated some of the biggest names in Hollywood over the past few years. However, a revelation at rapper Drake's party in 2016 forced Mayer to change his way and completely shun dating and embrace the single life. While that may have left many heartbroken, it has given the New Light hitmaker a deeper meaning by being single over the past five years. In a recent podcast with Alex Cooper of Call Her Daddy, Mayer opened up about his decision and how it has helped him.

The start of this story goes all the way back to 2016 when Mayer was attending his close friend and rap superstar Drake's lavish birthday party. There, Mayer decided to push the limit and explore what happened if he kept drinking. According to the 45-year-old star, he ended up making a fool of himself at the party and ended up with a hangover that lasted six days.

Full Potential

When he woke up on the sixth day still hungover, Mayer knew he had to make some changes in his life and had an honest conversation with himself about untapped potential. The Slow Dancing In a Burning Room star decided that he did not want to operate at 60% potential and wanted to push that number to 100%. In order to do so, the first change he made to his life was to cut out drinking. While he admits it was boring at first, he got used to it over time and does not feel the need to be intoxicated anymore.

Opening Up on a Podcast

Mayer recently appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast hosted by Alex Cooper. There, the 28-year-old host asked a question that many have been dying to know the answer to for years now. Mayer has been in a relationship with the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift among others. So his aversion to the same in recent years was definitely surprising.

Liquid Courage

In the podcast, he said, "Dating is no longer a codified activity for me, it doesn't exist in a kind of… it's not patterned anymore. I don't really date — I don't think that I have to, to be quite honest. I quit drinking like six years ago, so I don't have the liquid courage. I just have dry courage. You have to be honest. You have to express yourself — you have to be glaringly honest… You have to express your anxieties — you can't just walk over them by drinking."
