Mads Mikkelsen has opened up about the possibility of Johnny Depp returning to the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Johnny Depp, 59, has had a complicated past few years. The Sherlock Gnomes star faced multiple legal battles, the most famous of which being the much-discussed defamation trial between him and his ex-wife, Amber Heard, 36. After the trial's verdict was given in his favor, many fans began wondering if he would be returning to franchises he had previously left.
"I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and I have respected and agreed to that request,” Johnny shared at the time. Actor Mads Mikkelsen, best known for his work on Hannibal and Casino Royale, replaced the star in the role.
Mads has recently opened up about taking over the role and about the possibility of Depp returning.
“I think he’s an amazing actor, I think he did a fantastic job," Mads told Vanity Fair. "Having said that, I could not copy it. There was no way I could just copy it, because it’s so much him. It would be creative suicide. So, we had to come up with something else, something that was mine, and build a bridge between him and me.”
“I didn’t interact too much with them, but I could understand why they had their hearts broken," he said of replacing the star.
“It was very intimidating,” Mads went on..
“Obviously, well, now the course has changed—he won the suit, the court [case]—so let’s see if he comes back. He might," Mads teased.
