Most actors like to flex their acting muscles. This means that they enjoy portraying a variety of characters. However, things can quickly change once you star in a blockbuster or a movie that becomes a sudden hit.
Hollywood tends to typecast actors and tries to keep them playing the same role repeatedly. Depending on how they feel about it, it can be considered good or bad. So, let's look at some actors who seem to keep playing the same character for better or worse.
Once upon a time, there was an actor who got called for every sappy romantic leading man role, and that was Hugh Grant. Who can forget Four Weddings and a Funeral or Notting Hill, huh? This lad became the quintessential British romantic lead, and we all loved it.
Speaking of a romantic leading man, how about a leading lady? Well, back in the day, that person was Meg Ryan. I mean, come on, can you imagine anyone else playing Sally in When Harry Met Sally? I think not. And then came movies like Sleepless in Seattle or You've Got Mail that got us hooked line and sinker. Meg Ryan built her career on that, and we ate it up.
Here's another leading lady who's a little different. If you were looking for a young woman to portray a lady from another century, Kiera Knightley would be it. Even though her break-out role was playing a female soccer player in, Bend it Like Beckham, since that movie, she has surely flexed her acting muscles, but somehow period pieces are what she excels at, huh?
Okay, Harrison Ford doesn't play the same roles anymore now that he's older. But back in the '80s and '90s, he was the cocky reluctant action hero and a man on a mission. It's roles like Indiana Jones and playing Han Solo in Star Wars that really propelled his career. I don't know about you, but I miss those days.
Switching gears, now let's move on to the ultimate king of awkwardness, ha, ha. I give you Michael Cera. If a movie director is looking for somebody to play a shy yet loveable character, Michale Cera fits the bill quite well. Don't you think? And he's been excelling at these roles ever since. I'm interested to see where he would go next, though.
I don't know why, but I can't stop talking about comedic talents, h, aha. Another man with a funny bone is definitely Adam Sandler. But don't you feel like he's playing the same character over and over again? It's not necessarily a bad thing I just think it's a bit one-note kind of actor. However, I really did love him in The Wedding Singer.
Speaking of funny ladies, I've got another talented woman for you, and her name is Tina Fey. Could you really have Mean Girls without her, huh? I don't think so, hehe. Certainly, she honed her comedic acting skills on SNL, but I love to see more of her in movies, too.
It's no doubt that Vin Diesel's most break-out role was playing Dominic Toretto in The Fast and the Furious. He literally made that movie and had a huge hand in creating a multimillion-dollar franchise. But because of it, every other film he does seems like he's just replaying the same character. We need to see some more depth to his performances, no?
Just like Chris Pratt, Ryan Reynolds delivers funny lines like a champ. It all started with him playing Van Wilder, the cocky, upbeat, loud-mouth character who will make you laugh out loud. I think it was just a rehearsal for his ultimate role of Deadpool, which I can't see anyone else pull off like him.
It seems like Chris Pratt took over the torch for Harrison Ford, huh? Now he's the reluctant hero who's kicking butt in a humorous kind of way. I think the whole Guardians of the Galaxy franchise wouldn't be the same without him. It's the humor he brings from his days on the set of Parks and Recreation to all the action roles that have endeared him to people.
Speaking of different kinds of action heroes, let's talk about Jason Statham. We all know he started as a cockney tough guy in Guy Richie's awesome action movies, but then he moved on to create his own legacy. If you need a guy that looks good while he kicks someone's butt, Statham is the man for you. Oh, and don't forget the sexy British accent, too.
Here's an actress who's often frustrated with the roles Hollywood offers her. Anna Kendrick became a household name after her memorable roles in Twilight and Pitch Perfect. Since then, she's played the roles of wholesome women who never swear and are obsessed with their kids. That couldn't be further from her real life persona so let's hope she can expand her repertoire soon, ha, ha.
There was a time when Jennifer Aniston was typecast a lot. We can thank her role on Friends for that. She literally became the actress to play a woman who ends up falling in love with a guy she doesn't really like, haha. But thankfully, she was able to break away from that somehow in roles like the one she did in the movie Cake.
As much as I love the comedic genius of Will Ferrell, all the roles he plays aren't too much of a stretch. He pretty much always portrays a man-child who's ready to throw a tantrum, eh? It's lovable, that's for sure, but we need to seem more of an arch from him, no?
If you're looking for that girl to play a total weirdo who's going to slightly creep your out, Audrey Plaza is your girl. Don't get me wrong, I love her and her odd sense of humor, but the girl needs some depth, ha, ha. I think she's pretty much playing herself, though.
When you think of the '90s and 2000s action stars, one name comes to mind — Tom Cruise, of course. If it wasn't for the Mission Impossible franchise, it might not have happened that way, but there it is. I feel like that's the only role we see Tom Cruise doing these days. How about going back to his Rain Man days, huh?
The Rock might have been born to be a wrestler, but those days are far behind him. Now, he's a bonafide action star. However, I feel like all his characters are the same adventurous, headstrong leader with a caring side in all the movies he's in, huh? The only thing that changes is the scenery.
Every movie with female leads needs a trusted sidekick. Am I right? And it's even better if that friend is super funny, too. Well, that's where Rebel Wilson comes in. She's not only the best friend, but she can hold a joke or two. I, for one, really enjoy that, and I can't wait to see more of this awesome funny lady.
