Bus Driver Shortage Leaves School Using Party Bus With Stripper Poles For Field Trip

After one high school was left unable to find a school bus which would take their students on a field trip, the staff had to put their thinking caps on as to how they would transport their students.

One idea that ended up being more successful than they may initially have thought was to hire out a party bus! However, the teachers involved also stressed that the event highlights serious issues facing the education system at present.

Jim Mayers, who is an 11th grade Advanced Placement language and composition teacher at Boston's Brooke Charter School, tweeted about the field trip in a since-deleted post.

The bus was fully kitted out with the usual party bus frippery, including "stripper poles."

Mayers initially tweeted, "Due to the national school bus driver shortage, my school has hired a party bus with stripper poles to transport us for a field trip. This is not a drill."

While the day was a "success" according to Mayers, the event spoke to deeper issues currently facing the education system.

"It is a funny story, but there actually is a real bus shortage and it speaks to major flaws in our education system," Mayers went on to write.

Having since deleted his tweet about the field trip, Mayers continued to explain: "I'm worried that there is too much attention being paid to the tweet itself, or simply the fact that it went viral, instead of attending to the many systemic issues that are facing not just my students, but students all across the country."

Many school districts across the US are currently facing a shocking shortage of school bus drivers.

The devastating shortage has pushed states such as Massachusetts to also get inventive, with them even having to go so far as calling in the National Guard to help with transporting school students.

While renting party busses may not be a long-term solution, it was certainly ingenious at the time.

Mayers has since encouraged everyone who can to read more about the education system and attend local school board meetings, with a view to helping make real change to the education system.
