Man Sets House On Fire Using TikTok Hack To Cook Steak In Toaster

Lifehacks are a seemingly innocent concept meant to make our lives easier by providing some sort of time, cost, or resource benefit. There are lifehacks for every area of life, with many falling into the realm of cooking.

But when one man was inspired by a universally hated cooking lifehack that involved using a toaster to cook steak and decided to give it a try, he received the worst result possible.

Our story begins with a TikTok uploaded by user @itsmeju1iette.

The video showed a 'cooking hack' she devised that involves cooking steak in a toaster. Yes, really.

Unsurprisingly, the internet hated it. While it racked up views, it also racked up comments expressing their disgust, going viral in the worst way.

Despite the world's collective horror at the method, someone decided to try it anyway.

And boy did that not work out well.

A man from New Zealand decided to give the hack a go, forgoing all the comments claiming it was dangerous health-wise and appliance-safety-wise.

Not only did he try to cook steak in a toaster, though...

He also left it unattended, leaving his home to get some fries to go with his freshly toasted steak.

He returned to his home engulfed in flames. When the fire was extinguished, the house he shared with his partner was badly damaged.

He's now trying to demand more money from his insurance company.

He got an initial $418,000 for the damage but was trying to get them to give him another $200,000. Unfortunately for him, his policy terms had changed and no longer covered the total for replacement, and instead just paid back the total amount insured, so he was turned away.

It's a cautionary tale, showing just what can happen if you don't think about what you see online.

We can now expand upon "don't believe everything you read" to "don't try every hack that you see." When it comes to cooking, the risks can grow far beyond your personal health and put others in danger, so keep a critical eye when watching these sorts of videos.
