10+ Actors Who Hurt Their Careers With One Bad Role

While one great role can totally turn a struggling career around, one bad role can hurt an actor's or actress' career.

Of course, this doesn't mean they can't turn things around in the future, but taking a role in a bad movie can hurt an actor's reputation and make it harder to find success.

Here are 10+ actors who hurt their careers with just one bad role.

Topher Grace

You don't hear much about Topher Grace now, but for a while, he had a promising career, especially after starring in That '70s Show.

However, after he took the role of Venom in Spider-Man 3, his acting career seemed to stall. The movie and the performance were definitely lacking.

John Travolta

Travolta's career has been a series of major highs and lows. He made a name for himself after starring in films like Grease, but his career stalled after that.

However, he came back on top after being in Pulp Fiction, only to hurt his career again by starring in the hilariously bad film, Battlefield Earth.

Freddie Prinze Jr.

While he might have been a staple actor of the '90s, Freddie Prinze Jr. struggled to really continue his career into the new millennium.

After starring as Fred in the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, most people didn't remember all of the things he had done before.

Demi Moore

Demi Moore was a big star in the '90s and she had been in many great movies, including Indecent Proposal.

However, her choice to act in G.I. Jane wasn't a great one. After this film, she wasn't in movies as a main leading lady anymore.

Jake Lloyd from *Star Wars.*

This one is quite sad as Lloyd's role as young Anakin Skywalker hurt his life more than his career.

After landing such an iconic part, the young actor ended up quitting acting because he dealt with bullying at school from peers and also received broader criticism from fans.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry was at the height of her career after winning the Oscar for her role in Monster's Ball in 2001.

However, she really hurt her career when she took the role of Catwoman in Catwoman. It was considered a really bad movie, and it seems as if her career has never fully recovered.

Kelly Marie Tran

Kelly Marie Tran is another sad casualty of Star Wars bullying. While her role as Rose Tico in The Last Jedi should have been a great thing for her career, she dealt with so much harassment from unhappy fans that it impacted her life greatly.

Hopefully she's still able to find traction again in the industry in the future.

Geena Davis

MGM

Geena Davis was a stand-out when she starred in movies like Thelma & Louise and A League of Their Own.

But after having so much critical success, she starred in the pirate-themed film, Cutthroat Island. The movie totally bombed and her career never quite recovered.

Taylor Kitsch

Taylor Kitsch looked like he was about to have a big career after he starred as Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights.

However, his big on-screen break didn't go so well. He starred in John Carter, a Disney film that was a total flop.

Taylor Lautner

After playing Jacob Black in the Twilight series, Lautner was poised to become a leading heartthrob.

However, he made some poor choices in roles, including playing the star in the 2011 film, Abduction. Now, you hardly ever hear about him.

Elizabeth Berkley

MGM

Elizabeth Berkley is best known for playing Jessie Spano in Saved By The Bell.

After the series was canceled, Berkley tried to branch out by taking a role in Showgirls, which had an NC-17 rating. The film earned many Razzies for being one of the worst movies ever.

Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner used to be a major A-list celebrity in the '80s after being in movies like The Untouchables and Dances With Wolves.

However, after starring in Waterworld, it was hard for him to regain the traction he had before.

Alicia Silverstone

While these days most superhero films are big blockbuster events, many of the older ones were not.

After starring in Batman & Robin, Silverstone's promising career took a turn for the worse as the film was a rather epic fail all around.

Hayden Christensen

Most people know that Christensen played Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels, and then, after this, he basically stopped acting.

The role was poorly written, and fans and critics alike weren't thrilled by the dialogue. This cast a shadow over his career.

Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom was a major heartthrob and rising star in the early '00s after playing Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and then Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean.

But, things really took a downturn after he starred in Elizabethtown, as the movie was hated by both critics and audiences.

George Clooney

In fairness to George Clooney, he had very little to work with. Batman and Robin was just an all-around terrible movie that was doomed to be a failure right from the start.

The bat-nipples on the suit certainly didn't help matters, either.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

In the mid-'90s, Arnold Schwarzenegger was just beginning to flex his comedic muscles. He's lucky that playing the world's first pregnant man in Junior didn't derail his career entirely.

For such a preposterous plot, it's remarkable how unfunny it actually is.

Nicolas Cage

Few actors treat their careers with such reckless abandon as Nicolas Cage.

There are several examples I could point to but I think we can all agree the moment things started to go wrong was when Nic was cast in The Wicker Man.

Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler seems perfectly content to subject audiences to films like Hubie Halloween and The Do-Over with little to no remorse.

How he was allowed to step in front of a camera after Jack & Jill, I'll never understand.

Mike Myers

Mike Myers epitomized comedy throughout the '90s. If you want to get a good feel for the generation, films like Wayne's World and Austin Powers are great places to start.

Sadly, Myers' fall from grace took place after audiences were forced to sit through The Love Guru.

Johnny Depp

One thing I will give Johnny full credit for is his fearlessness when it comes to choosing roles. It's obvious his passion is what dictates his choice.

Which is why I find it so confusing that he opted to play Tonto in The Lone Ranger.

Anne Hathaway

Let it be known that I absolutely love and adore Anne Hathaway — I just love the original version of The Witches more.

I could have told you that this was a bad idea from the start. Not everything needs a reboot, Hollywood.

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were the biggest celebrity power couple of the early '00s. Before Gigli hit theaters, fans couldn't wait to see "Bennifer" on the big screen.

If ever there was a film that taught us to be careful what we wish for, this is it.

Colin Farrell

The Irish heartthrob is yet another actor with multiple box office bombs attached to his resume.

I personally didn't find Alexander to be that bad of a film at all, but that is most assuredly the minority opinion.

Cuba Gooding Jr.

Sadly, before homosexuality could be accepted by mainstream media, it first had to endure being ridiculed.

Boat Trip is an embarrassing relic of its time. It's nothing more than an ode to the forgotten and outdated gay-bashing humor of the '90s, ignorant and offensive.

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey was one of the most popular comedians throughout the '90s. But at the turn of the millennium, Jim decided to try his hand at more serious and dramatic roles.

Unfortunately, fans just weren't accepting of him as a deranged killer in The Number 23.

Shia LaBeouf

Come on, Shia — you were doing so well! Peanut Butter Falcon was inspiring, Honey Boy was superb. But then you had to go and get tatted up for The Tax Collector.

It feels like we're back at square one.

Eddie Murphy

Did you know that Eddie Murphy was nominated for an Oscar for Dream Girls at the same time that Norbit was making rounds in theaters?

Many believe that Norbit's detestable audience reception is what cost Eddie his Oscar gold.

Tom Hardy

When I first heard that Tom Hardy was going to star in a biopic about Al Capone, I was beyond excited.

You can imagine my disappointment when all that Tom managed to do in Capone was mutter like a mad man and soil himself.

Pauly Shore

Pauly Shore, aka "The Weasel," was the biggest comedian on the planet, thanks to classic films like Son in Law and Encino Man.

But after a slew of bad career moves that include In The Army Now, Pauly has become all but forgotten.
