A new device can help expel alcohol three times faster than your liver alone. It works by helping the patient hyperventilate, which allows the lungs to help remove alcohol from your system. But no, hyperventilating on your own will not have the same effect. That will just make you pass out.
Scientists Invented A Device To Help You Sober Up Faster
The device is pretty simple.
When you hyperventilate, you expel a lot of carbon dioxide in your blood, but also a lot of alcohol. If you did this without the device, you would decrease the level of gas in your blood too much, which is detrimental to your health. The device returns the precise amount of needed carbon dioxide to your blood.
This device could be a game-changer.
Binge drinking is incredibly dangerous. It's estimated that 3 million people die from alcohol abuse a year! Just one excessive night of drinking can be fatal. Until now, doctors could do little more than monitor someone with dangerous levels of alcohol in their blood. It was all up to the liver.
Because the device is simple, it could be used anywhere.
The device is the size of a briefcase with a mask and a compressed tank of carbon dioxide. Dr. Joseph Fisher, who created the device, said in a press release:
"It's very basic, low-tech device that could be made anywhere in the world: no electronics, no computers or filters are required. [...] It's almost inexplicable why we didn't try this decades ago."
The device is not available yet.
Researchers are currently testing the effectiveness of the device. For safety, the researchers are examining a lower level of intoxication, about 0.1%, which is impairing, but not deadly. And although this technology could be used to sober up fast, drinking responsibly is still far safer and better for your health.
