Ellie Goulding recently landed in hot water with some fans after she explained her own diet routine.

Speaking to The Mirror Ellie revealed that she fasts and consumes no food for up to 40 hours at a time. "I do it very safely by having a purposefully nutritious food day the day before and after,” she said.

"On the fast day, I drink high-grade electrolytes and a LOT of water (plus tea and coffee)."

"Fasting is safe and beneficial unless you are diabetic or have serious health issues. I built my way up to 40-hour fasts over time (started with 12)," Ellie said. She added that fasting "is a great way to give your digestive system a break."

Fans were not impressed with Ellie's diet.

Fans accused Ellie of being an irresponsible role model and promoting an unhealthy lifestyle for her fans, as most people cannot fast for forty hours safely without guidance from a medical or nutritional professional.

Fans pointed out that fasting is often a part of disordered eating.

"Most people won’t see it as being healthy and exercising, they will only see the fasting," a fan tweeted.

Ellie responded to these tweets, defending herself.

"I eat a seriously huge amount and exercise regularly. I’m super healthy, I drink sometimes, eat whatever I want, and then I fast for one day a week," Ellie tweeted in response to the backlash.

"It is not starving myself," Ellie insisted.
