Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Call it Quits After Six Years of Dating

The rumors of separation started after Alwyn hadn't been seen in any of Swift's shows. In the past, he was always spotted by fans watching her performance, and people were worried he didn't show up yet.

Initially, a source had told PEOPLE in March that "Joe will travel with her when he can. They are great together. Joe is super supportive of her career." This previous statement contributed to people's suspicions.

Entertainment Tonight first shared the news; however, there needed to be more clarity about the legitimacy of the break-up. They affirmed it was an amicable break-up, and they aren't together since a couple of weeks ago

Later, PEOPLE magazine said that a close source of Taylor had confirmed she and the English actor were no longer together. "The relationship had just run its course. It's why [Alwyn] hasn't been spotted at any shows," Billboard added.

Neither Taylor nor Joe has talked about the breakup, and it's most likely any of them will do it. During their six years together, they made all of their efforts to keep their relationship as private as possible.

Both had said they wouldn't share any details of their relationship status, even though they were aware of people's curiosity. Joe once said, "I just don't feel it's something I want to offer up to be picked apart by people who don't know about it, and it's just not theirs to have."

In the last couple of years, there were a lot of rumors that the couple might be engaged and even that they got secretly married. "I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn't say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn't say," Alwyn said regarding an engagement.

"I've learned that if I do, people think it's up for discussion, and our relationship isn't up for discussion," she told The Guardian in 2019 when she was asked about her and Alwyn.

Though Swift's fans always tried to respect their relationship, they were very sad about the news, so they shared their reactions online. Several memes on the topic went viral.

While some people preferred to wait for an official confirmation, the common response was to be very upset about it. Both Taylor and Joe were trending topics on Twitter, and very popular on TikTok.

They were allegedly together since 2016; however, their relationship became public in 2017. Since then, the actor became Swift's inspiration for many of her songs, including one of her latest hits, Lavender Haze.

Swift said about the song, "I guess, theoretically, when you're in the lavender haze you'll do anything to stay there and not let people bring you down off of that cloud. I think a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just 'public figures,' because we live in the era of social media, and if the world finds out that you're in love with somebody, they're going to weigh in on it"

He also inspired several hits from her sixth studio album, Reputation, such as Delicate, Gorgeous, or King of My Heart, and others from her album Lover, which is believed to be mostly written about their relationship, especially songs like Daylight, Cornelia Street and Cruel Summer.

Alwyn also has co-writing credits in a few songs from her albums Folklore and Evermore, including the country hit Betty, and the sad ballad, Champagne Problems, respectively. This collaboration got him his first Grammy.

During her Grammy acceptance speech after she won Album of The Year for Folklore, Swift said, "Joe is the first person that I play every single song that I write, and I had the best time writing songs with you in quarantine."

They supposedly met during the 2016 Met Gala while Taylor was dating DJ Calvin Harris. Fans believe their first encounter is referenced in her 2017 song Dress. Still, she briefly dated actor Tom Hiddleston before starting her relationship with Alwyn.

By early 2017, rumors about their dating were increasingly relevant. A close source to Taylor said she was very happy at the moment but preferred to keep her relationship private since many of her previous relationships were under the public eye, such as her time with Harry Styles, Joe Jonas, or Jake Gyllenhaal.

Since then, Joe and Taylor were spotted in public several times. In 2020, the first engagement rumors started after he had a small cameo in Swift's Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, and people believed she had a diamond engagement ring.

They confirmed they were very supportive of each other's careers; still, though most people believed Joe was the one for Taylor, their fairy tale has come to an end.
