Wouldn’t it be awesome if Rachel McAdams – the original Regina George – was given a part in the upcoming film version of Mean Girls: The Musical? As Lacey Chabert’s character, Gretchen Wieners, would say, “That would be fetch!”

Is She Returning?

In an interview with ET recently, the 44-year-old actress was asked about a possible appearance in the new movie, which started production early this month. After all, Amanda Seyfried had hinted that it might happen.

Sad to say, McAdams revealed that her return to the iconic franchise wasn’t “in the works.”

She 'Would Never Say No To Tina Fey' Though

However, when host Rachel Smith probed whether she wanted to be in the movie, the actress replied that she “would never say no to Tina Fey – ever, ever, ever.”

Fey Wrote The Screenplay

Fey is the writer of the upcoming musical film as well as the original 2004 version and was also responsible for bringing Mean Girls to Broadway in 2018.

Aside from writing the screenplay, which was based on the book Queen Bees & Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman, Fey was also part of the cast. She played Ms. Norbury, the Math teacher.

The Original Movie Was A Huge Hit

The movie was a massive hit when it was released in 2004, grossing over $130 million.

Broadway Debut

It quickly rose to pop culture icon status and was turned into a stage musical in 2017, debuting on Broadway in April of the following year and running until 2020.

Going Back To The Big Screen

In January 2020, Fey announced that Mean Girls was going back to the big screen, this time as a film adaptation of the Broadway musical.

The New Cast

Aside from Rapp, the new film will star Angourie Rice (as Cady), Auli'i Cravalho, and Bebe Wood, among others. Fey will reprise her role as Ms. Norbury as well.

McAdams Is Still Acting, Though

While it’s a little sad that McAdams (or the rest of the original Plastics) isn’t returning in some way, that doesn’t mean the Vow actress isn’t keeping busy in Hollywood.

She Has A New Movie

She has a new movie coming out called Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, which is based on the bestselling novel by Judy Blume.
