You know that they say "your home is your castle," which basically means you can do whatever you please inside your living quarters. But just because that's a fact doesn't mean it will all be in good taste. Am I right?
As it turns out, plenty of trends will not stand the test of time. That's why when a recent Reddit thread asked, "Interior Designers, what will this generation's version of shag carpeting be?" people had a lot of interesting things to say. So let's check it out.
I don't know about you, but this type of stairwell scares the crap out of me. I already have a bit of vertigo going down a stairwell, but now I would be that much more scared if I encountered something like this. Can you imagine an elderly person trying to climb that down? Oh, yeah, no!
"I really don’t like the fireplace design where you are intended to put your TV over it. A TV is way too high when over the fireplace."
I totally agree with that. We visited my fiancé's brother's house, and his TV was so high up that I got a kink in my neck just trying to watch it. I hate that.
I honestly never got that trend in the first place. In my opinion, barn doors belong in a barn, lol. As a decor feature, I get the appeal, but it's just not something that I believe will look good in a few years. This trend will date itself.
"I am not an interior designer but I cannot stand the whole 'farmhouse chic' trend and can’t wait for it to go away, it’s everywhere. What’s everyone going to do when it becomes dated and they can’t sell their homes because it looks like an [expletive] farmhouse?"
Ha, ha, I second that.
"Gray. Everything gray. It’s the orange and brown of the '60s, '70s, and '80s. It’s the beige of the '90s and '00s."
Okay, confession time — gray is my favorite color so I actually love that idea. Don't hate me, lol.
"All-white kitchens are going to seriously date houses in a decade or so. You know the ones I mean — white cabinets, quartz countertops, white backsplash."
There's something super clean about an all-white kitchen, but I see what this person means. I loved the idea, but now I'm starting to question it.
When I was growing up, there was no such thing as open concept floor plans. Not until about 10-15 years ago they started to pop up. Honestly, when done right, it can work, but sometimes you can just get lost in all that space, no?
"Open concept bathrooms. I don’t need to see you taking a dump from my bed."
Here's another idea that gets taken to the extreme. I get that some people like that whole open concept, but when it comes to the bathroom, let's just keep it closed, okay?
Who here loves granite countertops? I'll admit I've always wanted a marble one in my kitchen. So I think it depends on the design and whether or not you have it throughout the entire space. Something like this, I find is a bit too much.
"Boho-chic. I see a lot of former Airbnbs needing full restyling."
Ha, ha, I kind of like the whole boho-chic idea, but I think the problem is that people take it to the extreme. A few cute touches here and there are perfectly fine, but when you go all out, it's so overdone.
"All of the flat white and concrete is just going to make the houses look dated in about 5 years. Big concrete squares don't look good, people!"
Concrete in the house? Um, no, thanks. I really don't know what kind of person finds these panels attractive, lol.
"Shiplap. I don't even know what it is, but HGTV won't shut up about it so clearly there's going to be far too much of it in a few years."
Ha, ha. Nope, I've never been a fan of this idea, and it won't grow on me. I promise you.
"Beating minimalism to death with a sledgehammer. Everything being grey/white, even painting over gorgeous natural wood, practically zero color anywhere. Just breaks my heart when they take beautiful vintage homes and renovate them to [expletive] by making everything look so sterile."
I like a bit of minimalism to make the place less cluttered, but it needs to feel homey, too. Do you agree?
"I grew up in a 100-year-old house. It had a nice bathtub with a sloping back so you could comfortably lounge in the bath. Modern tubs are pretty nearly straight up on the back so there's no comfortable way to soak, and read a book."
Yup, I used to be a notorious bath taker, so I totally understand. Now, I don't really have the time, but I love the concept of a comfy bathtub.
"I don't know if it's new, but it drives me crazy when people replace cabinetry with open shelves. Don't people understand dust? Bugs ring a bell? Pet hair? Speaking of pets, how do you keep your cats from messing around with that setup?"
I think there's a place for this, but it needs to be used sparingly, no?
"I've seen several homes with appliances integrated into the construction of the kitchen itself. Not just in an alcove but actually built into the wall. Sure, it's convenient that there's a cappuccino machine built into the wall next to the cabinet over the center island countertop. But what happens when (not if, when) it needs maintenance? Do I have to call a goddamn carpenter as well as a cappuccino machine repairman? Do I have to consider if this is a load-bearing wall that contains my broken appliance? And something that's just a convenience like that is one thing, but they do it with stuff like fridges, too."
Yikes! I didn't think of that.
"Might be an unpopular opinion but I don't need my home to be smart...I just need things to happen when they are supposed to happen and not completely shut off when some douche thought it was a good idea to play who can touch the powerline."
Oh my goodness. I hear this person loud and clear.
"Total lack of solar panels/windmills. I think it's criminal that new builds don't have any form of energy generator built-in."
I honestly totally agree with this. My dream home would have a roof full of solar panels. We need to rely less on electricity and instead use solar and wind power. That's the way of the future.
